Guidelines for writing job adverts and increasing your profile

Competition amongst employers for recruiting the right calibre of graduate is intense. Careful attention should be given when writing your job advert so that students and graduates are presented with detailed and accurate information regarding the opportunity, and have a clear understanding of the qualities and competencies needed to perform the role successfully, as this will ensure the most suitable candidates apply.

Unlike general recruitment websites, this system allows you to target students and graduates of the University of Bolton, therefore please take the opportunity to tailor your offer to this audience.

When entering details for your advertisement on our system the following guidance is suggested:

Position Title: This is the first text that students will see when searching for a vacancy within the system. Make it brief but to the point. For example, ‘Financial Risk Analyst’ is better than just stating ‘Analyst’. Also try and make the distinction between a placement and graduate role.

Application Closing Date: Please ensure you inform the Careers Team if the application closing date changes after the opportunity has been approved and published. You should receive an email when the opportunity is due to expire.

Contact Information: Choose the person in your organisation who is recruiting for the role. Please tick the box if you would rather this contact was not viewable to applicants.

Expected Commencement Date: Please indicate when the role is expected to begin.

Remuneration: Please try and provide a figure in this box – either the hourly rate, wage per month or per annum. Try to avoid putting ‘Competitive’ or ‘Negotiable’ salary. Students are more likely to apply for a job if the salary is provided. If you do not wish to state the exact salary, please provide a range i.e. £20,000 - £25,000 per annum, or state that the salary meets or exceeds the National Minimum Wage.  

If the salary is being paid in a currency other than GBP please state the salary in the currency the applicant will be paid and also add: approx.. £****GBP.  

If the role is a voluntary position please state ‘Voluntary’ under the heading ‘remuneration’.

Location: To improve student search results, add towns or regions where roles will be based. For graduate scheme/placements with UK-wide opportunities use the location “United Kingdom”.

Summary: This, along with the title of the opportunity, will be the first thing an applicant sees, so try and aim for two succinct sentences which will provide an overview of the role, as this will encourage appropriate candidates to want to read more. The bulk of the information about the role needs to go in the ‘details’ box. Try and be unique – don’t just copy a paragraph from the job description!

Details: This is one of the main sections where you will need to record the bulk of information about the role.

  • Describe the role clearly including all the duties and responsibilities, skills, qualifications and experience needed.
  • Provide a brief summary of your organisation and link applicants to your website.
  • Be specific about the benefits, including salary, training, career progression, rewards and incentives.
  • Specify what makes your role/organisation unique – remember that students and graduates will be comparing what you offer against others.
  • Avoid clichés: avoid the sort of phrases that sound good but mean nothing such as ‘competitive package’ (compared to whom?) and ‘leading UK firm’ (leading what?).

Application Procedures: Keep the instructions simple and state exactly what you require for example if you require a CV instead of an application form let them know, and try and provide a relevant email/web address. Detailed information can be added as an attachment viewed with your advertisement.

Please note: Applications made by students and graduates to employer vacancies are confidential, and under data protection the University does not have automatic right to know that a student or graduate has applied for any position - therefore we are unfortunately not able to pass on communications or messages to the student or graduate on behalf of the employer if they are unable to reach them for whatever reason (unless the student or graduate has given us express permission to do so).
